πŸ’° A Surprising Habit Millionaires Share

Welcome, Future Early Retirees.

The holiday season kicks off tomorrow with Halloween! It's an exciting time to spend with family and friends. Whether it is through giving your time or your money, I encourage you to find ways to give this holiday season. According to a 2022 Bank of America study, 85% of affluent households gave to charity. Obviously, not everyone is in a position to donate financially, but this statistic highlights that giving is an integral part of life. While donating money might not be the most direct path to financial freedom, the act of giving enriches our lives in other meaningful ways.

Why Give?

  • Community Connection: Giving fosters a sense of community and belonging. It connects us with others, reducing feelings of isolation and enhancing our social networks.

  • Personal Growth: Acts of giving can lead to personal satisfaction, increase your empathy, and even boost your physical health through the release of feel-good hormones.

  • Setting an Example: For those with children or younger siblings, giving during the holidays sets a powerful example of altruism and community involvement.

Ways to Give Beyond Money:

When financial resources are tight, especially if you're dealing with bad debt, low income, or just making ends meet, donating money might not be feasible. However, there are numerous other ways to contribute:

  1. Volunteering

  • At Shelters: Offer your time at homeless or animal shelters. These places often need help with serving meals, organizing donations, or simply spending time with those who might be alone during the holidays.

  • Community Events: Participate in local food drives, holiday toy collections, or community clean-ups. These activities not only help others but also get you engaged in your community.

  1. Skill Sharing

  • If you have a skill, consider teaching it. This could be anything from cooking, basic computer skills, to crafts. Local community centers, schools, or libraries often welcome volunteers for educational workshops.

  1. Donate Goods

  • Instead of money, consider donating items like clothes, books, or toys. Many charities will accept such donations, especially during the holiday season when the need for warmth and comfort increases.

Incorporating Giving into Your Holiday Plans:

  • Family Volunteering: Make it a family tradition to volunteer together. It can become one of the most cherished parts of your holiday season, teaching values of empathy and community service.

  • Create a Giving Calendar: Plan out different giving activities throughout the season. This could include one day for making and delivering cookies to neighbors, another for volunteering at a soup kitchen, etc.

As we approach the holidays, remember that giving back doesn’t have to strain your resources. It's about the spirit of generosity and the joy it brings into our lives.
